It is extremely fascinating to walk down the street or to go into a gift shop and notice the different suggestive T-Shirts available. There are shirts with cartoons on them, with quotes from TV shows and even ones with provocative quotations written on them. T-shirts have evolved and have turned into a new type of media. One of my friends has a GTL t-shirt (picture below) and the reaction he gets from people when he wears the T-shirt is pretty funny. Some people who don’t even know him come up to him and start talking about Jersey Shore or ask him how often he GTLs. Wearing certain T-shirts have turned into a way to communicate with people you barely know and to show some of your beliefs.
While it may not be as suggestive as the news or political commercials, I believe that T-shirts can also influence the way people think about certain topics. Chapter 7 suggests that the news and other TV programming can influence people’s views regarding politics and other important topics. A funny or thought provoking T-shirt can have the same influence as they can spark an intense debate about an important issue. For instance, while it may be an extreme example, the T-shirt below with the caption “we are your government” can strike up a debate about the role that the government plays in our society. Some people may argue that the government should be less dominant and controlling while others may argue that they are not influential enough. Either way I believe that T-shirts can influence people’s opinions and can force people to talk about important subjects that they otherwise would not have.

  1. Very interesting point Michael. This is exactly why clothing manufacturers such as Abercrombie have their name and logo all over their clothing- it is free marketing for them. The graphics on t-shirts do have a substantial influence on society. If I see a t-shirt numerous times, I realize it is popular and my interests are then persuaded to also acquire that shirt.

  2. You brought up a very good point; fashion definitely is one of the most effective communication tools. It says a lot about that person's character, his lifestyle along with many other things. And the tshirts you mentioned with quotes from tv shows is a great example of how people use fashion to express themselves. it also proves how much tv shows are constantly integrated to our lives.

  3. Mike great points. One of the quotes earlier in the semester had to do with describing media as extensions of man. The messages and symbols we wear on our clothing certainly act as an interesting medium that allow for interactions between people. Brilliant points.

  4. I am a graphic t-shirt fanatic so I can definitely relate to this post. In middle school I was asked on two different occasions to turn my shirt inside out because of the content of the shirt (which I am not lying was not that concerning to any one but one of the teachers there). T shirts are huge in any campaign or sporting event and its messages are simple yet effective amongst the public. I agree that it is an important media of everyday life and it could have a great effect depending on the situation.

  5. The friend with a GTL T-shirt example is great. T-shirts are like bumper stickers, becoming statements of our hobbies, experiences, and convictions.

But don't forget that T-shirts are also culturally and historically specific--very modern, very American, and possibly very white (or black?). In stuffwhitepeoplelike.com, Christian Lander talks about T-shirts, go take a look:
